🎄🪣 Jingle Bell Rock – Easy Bucket Drumming Play Along

By MusicNo Comments

The holiday season is here, and what better way to bring festive cheer to your music classroom than with a bucket drumming play-along to the classic Jingle Bell Rock! 🎄🥁

In this fun and engaging video, I’ve broken down the rhythm patterns for bucket drumming to make it easy for your students to follow along. The sheet music and song form in the video can be printed out below.

The whole song is mostly hand to hand. Right hand Left. Or Vice versa.

The only tricky parts may be switching the order from A Section to B Section where you’ll play 2 left’s in a row. The other is the stop at the F (fill) section. Make sure to count so you can pick back up on beat 2 with the left hand.

The end has a fun drum roll! Extend as long as you want and you can increase volume as loud as you want then signal to end together. Woo hoo! or Hooo hooo! (like 🎅 🤷‍♂️ 😆)

In the membership, there is the intermediate version and other fun songs and lessons to choose from.

Let me know how your students enjoy it – I’d love to hear their feedback or see your own classroom performances! 🎶

🥁🌔 Moon Rhythm: Day 11 on 11/11/24 at 11:11am

By MusicNo Comments

For over 100 years, this cross-genre rhythm has been one of the most universal beats, second only to the downbeat!

🎶 Jazz first introduced it on the hi-hat, Blues moved it to the snare, and soon, Rock ‘n Roll took it even further, influencing classic rock, disco, pop, EDM, and hip-hop.

🌑🌕🌑🌕 Today’s rhythm highlights the backbeat on beats 2 and 4.

Many people instinctively clap on 1 and 3, but it’s the backbeat (2 and 4) that brings the laid back groove.

Check out this clever move by Harry Connick Jr., who gets the crowd to clap on 2 and 4 without them changing anything! Feel how the energy shifts.

Example Songs with a Backbeat:

  • September – Earth, Wind & Fire: The kick drum starts on the front beat (1 and 3) at 8 seconds, then moves to the backbeat (2 and 4) on the snare at 12 seconds. Listen here
  • Queen Bee – Taj Mahal: Notice the backbeat on the kick drum in this reggae tune. Listen here

Try It Yourself: Pick a song you’re working on in 4/4 time.

  1. Record yourself playing and clap along on 1 & 3 (the front beat) for 4 measures.
  2. Then clap on 2 & 4 (the backbeat) for 4 measures. Feel the difference in groove.

No song? Just pull up one of your favorites and give it a try!

Oh, and today just happens to be Day 11 of the moon cycle (🌔 waxing gibbous), 11/11 (November 11), and I started writing this at 11:11. 🤷‍♂️ Coincidence or something meaningful?

Wishing you a special day.

The fourth-grade students at Metz Elementary School in Austin, Texas performed a creative version of bucketdrumming.net’ s La Bamba for their 2019 Cinco De Mayo performance, throwing in a little tambourine and air guitar to spice things up.

Music teacher Kayla Juarez, who teaches at Metz Elementary and Menchaca Elementary in Austin, said she loved the practicality of bucket drums: students didn’t have to share and the buckets were easy to replace if damaged or broken.

“I thought [bucket drumming] would be really cool and affordable,” she said. “My students are having a lot of fun with it.”

The biggest challenge was getting 20 fourth-graders to hit a bucket at the same time, Ms. Juarez said. To prepare for the performance, she split the students into groups so she could give more personalized attention to students requiring extra support, she said.

“The first time they tried to practice you can imagine how that went with different skill levels and abilities,” she said. “But the lightbulb finally clicked.”

Ms. Juarez said she knew she wanted to be a music teacher ever since she joined her school band in sixth grade. She said that, as a student, music and band were a place for creative expression and having fun as well as an outlet if she was having a bad day.

“I use that mentality I had as a student to do the same thing for my students now,” she said. “At the end of the day it’s really important to me they enjoy what they’re doing and it’s not a chore to come to music.”

Teacher Spotlight: Derek Currier

By MusicNo Comments

Led by music teacher Derek Currier, the 5th grade class at Discovery Academy of Science in Dunedin, Florida played not one, not two, but three bucket drum pieces for their school Music Fest on May 7.

The group had been practicing their bucket drumming skills since January and performed Can’t Stop the Feeling, Come Together and Rolling in the Deep for their classmates and families.

“[A highlight was] the excitement from the students and the parents at the end of the show,” Mr. Currier said. “And they had fun. That’s what it’s all about.”

Mr. Currier has been teaching music since he was 19-years-old and started the music program at Discovery Academy three years ago. He said bucket drums were the perfect way to teach hands-on lessons about percussion and rhythm.

“I was starting a program so I needed something cheap and fun. And [with bucket drumming] all I needed was buckets and sticks,” he said. “My goal in music classes is getting instruments in the kids’ hands. We aren’t going to just talk [about theory], we are going to play; we are going to do something.”

The bucket drums were not only inexpensive (Mr. Currier purchased them for $1 each at a local bait and tackle shop), but worked well as performance instruments because of their accessibility, versatility and portability, Mr. Currier said.

In addition to teaching bucket drumming, Mr. Currier also teaches saxophone, flute, clarinet, drum set and other instruments. He said one of his biggest passions as a music teacher is giving students hands-on experience with instruments. After learning on bucket drums, some students were even motivated to invest in drum sets to continue practicing, Mr. Currier said.

“I’m really about getting instruments into these hands to … give these kids a chance to make some noise and play,” he said. “It’s really motivating to see them do it.”

“Unexpected Instruments”

Kemit Price and his group, TRANSFORM, at Bridgeway Community Church in Columbia, Maryland worked hard to learn both the intermediate and advanced parts to The Little Drummer Boy and performed the piece at their Christmas celebration on December 23. Check out the video at the bottom of the post! He was assisted by adult leaders Leette Greene, Richard Norvell, Jessie Norvell and Jenni Kee.

“The kids were really excited about that, just being able to complete the piece and combine those two parts together,” Mr. Kemit said. “It was pretty complicated but they eventually got it.”

Mr. Kemit said the bucket drums were a perfect fit for his group because they were inexpensive, allowed the students to practice anywhere and also matched the unique style of Bridgeway Church with its graffiti walls, unconventional approach to outreach and focus on inclusivity.

“Our motto is to glorify God with unexpected instruments,” Mr. Kemit said. “[Our church] is very accepting of different types of people and it’s very unorthodox so the bucket drumming fit right into that.”

Mr. Kemit has played drums and keyboard for nearly 30 years and also has a background as a choir director. He said bucketdrumming.net videos helped teach his students music and percussion skills as well as leadership skills.

“[Students learned to] lead, calling out the different cues,” he said. “I found it very rewarding helping kids become leaders and teaching them skills they can use both in the church and outside as well.”

Do you know all 10 of the Bucket Drumming Parts & Equipment Names?

By Music3 Comments

This lesson describes the 10 names for our bucket drumming equipment and parts.

Do you know all of them?

Here’s the quiz printout.

This lesson is meant for the beginning of our bucket drumming journey.

If we don’t know the names of the equipment we use or the parts of the bucket we play, it will make learning and teaching more difficult.

Imagine if I said, “play that thing on that thing.”

It will be hard to understand what I’m talking about unless you see me pointing.

Learning these words is the foundation for communication and thinking for bucket drumming here on.

Happy Drumming & Learning to you!
